how are you doing? >> reporter: it is chilly in walnut creek and we have been keeping a close eye on the temperature. behind me 29 degrees just changed about 10 seconds ago saying 28. there is a freeze warning in effect until 9 a.m. we are right in the middle of this col snap. grab a jacket and gloves. overnight 20s in the bay area. on sunday san jose saw a record low of 26, 22 in santa rosa, here in walnut creek 23. crowds were sparse at the farmer's market over the weekend trying to keep warm. >> i went to starbucks and sat outside because i love it. >> it's 25 degrees. >> it's great! expect to break until tomorrow am. >> if you are driving it will take a while to warm up your engine but there's not a lot of cars out there at 4:33. >> ice scrapers off the windows last week and now reports of black ice. so just be careful on 92. sounds like it's from half moon bay and skyline boulevard. that's where they are getting reports of black ice. we just talked to chp so this is a live look at 92 but this is the san mateo bridge where it looks like everything is flowing nicely. not a lot of cars on the road at 4:33. a live look at the bay bridge a few cars heading towards the pay gates. no metering lights yet. they usually turn them on around 6 to 6:15 so you were good to go across the upper deck. not a lot of overnight roadwork. the one spot where we are seeing it in lanes is southbound 880 approaching fruitvale between embarcadero and fruitvale. they have one lane blocked. they are telling us until about 7:00 this morning. that's when it should wrap up.

in the meantime your drive times for the east bay still free and clear and mass transit no delay for bart, ace, muni, caltrain and ferries. that's traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. a big announcement today from oakland police and city leaders there. they hope to share a plan of action after a deadly violent weekend in the city. five people shot on seminary drive last night multiple people injured but nobody killed. there were a total of three nonfatal shootings yesterday and on friday, four people were killed in separate incidents. no arrests have been made and some city leaders say they have just had enough. >> i think that not only a stat of emergency but we also need to call out, reach out to other law enforcement. if it's u.s. marshals, the sheriff, the state police, that's what oakland needs to immediately be able to deal with this crime issue. >> in the new year there have already been six homicides in oakland, last year 131 the most

in six years. this afternoon two oakland men accused of killing two girls scheduled to enter their pleas in court. 15-year-old rachel gerstle and bobbie sartain were killed in east oakland in late november. court documents show two men are charged with the murders. a rape suspect is under arrest in san francisco after allegedly assaulting a woman in her apartment. police say 25-year-old jovann jones of marin city barged into the apartment on telegraph hill as the 26-year-old victim was arriving home on saturday night. jones allegedly demanded money and forced her on to the floor. police later arrested him in a backyard on gre street. gun control will take center stage tomorrow on capitol hill when the vice president joe biden will give his recommendations on the

matter to president obama. susan mcginnis shows us how both sides of the debate are reacting. >> reporter: gun shows like this one in daly city, california are packed with recor crowds a month after the shooting at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. >> it looks likes it has created demand. >> reporter: there is a dramatic increase in gun sales as lawmakers consider a federal ban on assault weapons. >> we believe that gun violence is a public health crisis! >> reporter: hundreds rallied in seattle yesterday in support of gun control. >> i think that there are more rational reasonable people who understand the difference between assault weapons and, you know, other types of guns that you might have for hunting purposes. >> reporter: vice president joe biden will give president obama his recommendations for curbing gun violence tomorrow. they could include restrictions

on assault weapons and high capacity magazines as well as background checks on all gun buyers. the head of the national rifle association says he believes there's not enough support in congress to ban assault weapons. >> i would say that the likelihood is that they are not going to be able to get an assault weapons ban through this congress. >> reporter: it's a view many republicans share including senator john mccain who spoke on cbs' "face the nation." >> do you think an assault weapons ban can pass the congress? >> no. >> do you think it should? >> no. >> reporter: the nra is pushing for laws that would restrict the mentally ill from owning guns. susan mcginnis, cbs 5, washington. >> democratic senator charles schumer from new york is urging major gun retailers including walmart and sports authority to suspend sales of assault style weapons. people in newtown, connecticut are facing a difficult decision. what to do with a school that was the scene of a massacre.

residents passed the high school aud -- packed the high school auditorium yesterday to discuss the future of sandy hook elementary school where 26 people were killed. >> the school is broken and we are going to fix it, my 2-year- old things. my own opinion is i don't want to see the land and the building stay empty and broken. i want to do something with it. >> some residents say they would report turning it into a memorial park. so far there's no firm decision. following the sandy hook incident san francisco public schools are preparing safety drills for students and teachers. district officials are working with police to carry out a so- called active shooter drill for the first time. in addition, police will soon have digital versions of the floor plans for all of san francisco's public schools and those maps will be viewable on smartphones. pacific gas & electric is defending itself against allegations that its pipeline safety program was [

indiscernible ] back to the san bruno explosion. a consultant testified last week that pg&e had an effective program to check pipeline systems. the consultant testified that the public utilities commission said they were wrong when they said they didn't adequately monitor the lines. a fire destroyed a mobile home in mountain view. a trailer at the sahara village mobile home park went up in yesterday. no word on what caused the fire and no injuries. more than a dozen people at the hilton in san jose say a chemical odor made them sick yesterday. guests on the 18th floor complained about irritated throats and eyes so hazmat crews say air quality tests came up negative. nobody was hospitalized. the sharks are getting ready to play hockey after opening training camp yesterday as fans greeted the team in san jose. the sharks open the regular season next sunday night in

calgary the players have a new contract and the lockout is over. >> i'm glad they finally put their differences aside and decided to come back and give the fans what we deserve a hockey team. >> we were upset with the lockout. hockey is a huge part of our family. >> the nhl see some is now only 48 games within the conference. the sharks' first home game is january 24. there was action on and off the field at candlestick saturday night. san francisco police say they ejected 92 people from the packers-9ers game. 25 more were arrested for being drunk in public and two others were busted for auto burglary. there are more goosebumps than you might expect on a bart train. it was the annual no pants subway ride day. folks were encouraged to ride bart here in san francisco from all over the bay area fully

dressed except for no pants. nudity, however, was forbidden. the event was just for fun. >> there is no protest or message. we're just out here having a good time in a crazy city in the middle of the winter. >> there you go. the no pants ride began in new york in 2002 and now is an international event with riders in 59 cities around the world going pantless. they do it in boston, too, on the "t." it looks popular but strange. >> 4:41. how survivors of that costa concordia cruise ship disaster are marking that anniversary one year later. >> plus, funding fight. billions in sandy aid comes up for a vote in the house. why it still may not pass. >> and it's like searching for a needle in a haystack. why hunters are scouring the florida everglades to catch the most snakes. we'll tell you why.

weekend. that's right, almost 8-hundred people are trying to catch as many snakes as they can.. they have a in florida the first-ever python hunting challenge kicked off this weekend. almost 800 people are trying to catch as many snakes as they can. they have a month to do it and the prize, $1,500. another $1,000 would go to the person who catches the longest python. wildlife officials are hoping the contest will help get rid of the invasive burmese python population apparently a big deal down in florida. >> that's a lot of money. but come on -- >> think i would go to vegas. >> think so, too. >> give it my best shot there. >> they hunt you. >> yes, they do. >> i don't think i would want to do that. you know, they were somebody's pet and they let them go because they got too big and now they're everywhere. >> not for $1,500. it's cold in the bay area. this morning freezing temperatures around much of the interior valleys. those temperatures dropping like a rock early on.

in fact, the skies staying mostly clear overnight and look at the direction as the clouds push away from the coastline bringing cold air right from the continent back into the bay area and that is plunging these temperatures down to some very cold numbers. out the door today, it is going to be a frosty start to the day once again. mostly sunny by this afternoon and still, staying on the cool side. but looks like dry and warmer weather maybe a little taste of spring toward the middle of the week. freeze warnings in the bay area especially in the north bay valleys and into the east bay and south bay, as well. these temperatures are expected to plummet into the 20s and also the 30s. we are already there in many spots at least down into the 30s in many places inland. 31 and freezing in concord, 31 santa rosa, a little wind into napa keeping the wind up to 43 now. 32 san rafael, 38 in pacifica. a big dome of high pressure off the coast is keeping things cool and dry around the bay area. well, looks like that ridge is going to build over head the next couple of days meaning the temperatures will warm up and

moderate at night so not as cold tomorrow night. around the state 50s in the central valley, 20s in the high country. and it looks like the skies staying nice and clear throughout the day today. in fact, the next couple of days going to see plenty of sunshine. we are in one of those nice dry spells in the middle of winter now so we'll enjoy beautiful weather now but by next week maybe a return to rainfall. this afternoon still cool only 53 degrees in san jose, 51 in union city, east bay temperatures only in the 40s and the 50s for a high today. in the north bay warmer, 55 in santa rosa and 52 in san francisco. and looking out over the next couple of days, we have nice weather coming our way toward the middle of the week. maybe even some mid-60s toward wednesday and thursday a little spring fever breaking out but before we get to that we have more rain coming our way next week. >> look at all those 60s. we haven't seen those in quite a while. let's go outside. not a whole lot out there on

this monday morning. here's a live look in the south bay san jose 101 trimble exit headlights are southbound. both directions at the limit. we are not seeing a lot of overnight roadwork. let's check conditions right now near the dublin interchange. these headlights, this is westbound 580. the drive time is 15 minutes between the altamont pass and the dublin interchange. so again no major delays through livermore towards pleasanton. elsewhere to our maps, another live traffic camera. southbound 880 from viewed veil and embarcadero roadwork along that stretch, also portions of southbound 880 near bascomb but the drive team is still in the clear for this time of the morning. so these are your popular routes. you can see still looks good down the eastshore freeway. so heading out of town, trying

to catch a flight towards sfo everything looks good down along the peninsula, 101 all the way towards the south bay. guadalupe parkway at the limit. everything so far two thumbs up no major problems for bart, ace, muni, caltrain and ferries. that's a check of traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. back to you guys. >> thank you. three suspects are in custody this morning accused of a takeover robbery at nordstrom's in los angeles. the trio took 14 employees hostage on thursday at the westchester store. the suspects are accused of stabbing one worker and sexually assaulting another. 4:48 now. one year after the cruise ship disaster in italy survivors and family members returned to the scene for a day of remembrance. government leaders met with victim families to remember the 32 people who died in that shipwreck. they released a chunk of rock embedded in the cruise liner back out to sea and some

attended a memorial mass. >> it was a chance i think for the families to get together. a lot of these people have made friends with each other. >> luxury cruise liner slammed into the reef after the captain took it off course. he isn't facing charges. the house is expected to vote tomorrow on money for superstorm sandy worth billions. but the version before the house may not look like the one approved by the senate last year. critics say the senate plan includes too much money for projects that are not related to the storm. boeing 787 dreamliner isn't catching a break. japan airlines says the same plane with the fuel leak in boston leaked fuel again today. the u.s. government ordered a review of the new high-tech aircraft after a slew of issues last week including a cracked window in the cockpit and computer malfunctions. despite that, the government says the 787 is safe to fly.

goldman sachs, jpmorgan chase, citigroup and bank of america are among the firms expected to report quarterly profits this week. last week wells fargo disappointed investors when it said the money it makes from loans fell last quarter. nonbanking companies including ebay and general electric are also expected to report this week. gas prices are up after falling for the last three months according to the latest lundberg survey. the average price of a gallon of gas nationally up 7 cents in the last three weeks. we are paying a lot higher prices here in california 3.59. across the state the lowest average is in sacramento at 3.46. and the highest price not in san francisco is actually down in bakersfield at 3.65. antivirus software founder john mcafee is now living in portland, oregon and wants to produce a movie about his life. he was wanted in belize for questioning last year in the death of his neighbor. he left the country and was in

guatemala before being deported back to the u.s. mcafee said he couldn't talk about the murder but said while living in portland, he plans to work on a comic book and a movie about his life. >> we have sort of a collective now and portland is the central place for that. >> in previous interviews he said he would be glad to answer questions about the murder case if authorities met with him in a neutral country. >> i think we were saying, maybe a movie? that bizarre tale down there. time now 6:51. the awards season is under way. >> last night it was the golden globes. who were the big winners and the one big surprise no one saw coming. >> and zero dark thirty goes into dark release. could it be in the top spot with all the oscar buzz?

nominations its star daniel day- lewis scored the movie's only win earning best actor in a drama but wasn't the only former president on stage. bill clinton helped introduce the film. >> oh, my god! oh, my god! >> reporter: adele got to share the spot loot, too, with her golden glob win for best original song in the latest bond movie. the night also offered comic relief thanks to the show's co- host, former 1. nl stars tina fey and amy fuller. >> only at the golden globes do the beautiful people rub elbows with the rest of us. >> reporter: the made-for-tv movie game change its star said playing sarah palin was one of her most favorite jobs ever. bigad shaban, cbs news, beverly hills. jodie foster received the
